Set within the rural landscape of coastal Croatia, this four-apartment building reinterprets the traditional stone house through a contemporary architectural language rooted in simplicity, permanence, and privacy. Conceived as an inward-looking retreat, the design prioritizes protected views and private outdoor spaces over distant vistas, ensuring that the quality of living remains uncompromised by future neighboring developments. A robust stone envelope provides a calm, monolithic presence that draws inspiration from the scale and material character of local vernacular architecture, while deep openings in the facade offer essential shade and a sense of structural depth.
The interior is organized around a highly efficient structural grid and a central circulation core serving two units per floor, creating a rational system that is both economical and straightforward to construct. This disciplined geometry informs the entire architectural expression, balancing a compact footprint with living spaces that feel remarkably generous and calm. By opening living areas toward sheltered terraces and positioning bedrooms to maximize quietness and separation, the design creates a series of refined domestic sanctuaries. The resulting building stands as a testament to how traditional materiality and modern geometry can harmonize to provide a lasting sense of enclosure and retreat.
